Description

Hexane is a straight-chain, flammable alkane that is widely used as a relatively safe, largely unreactive, and easily evaporated non-polar solvent. It is used for extraction of cooling oils from seeds, cleaning and desgreasing. High purity hexane is commonly used in chromatography as a non-polar solvent.

Applications

Hexanes are widely used as nonpolar solvents in laboratories. They are used to extract cooking oils, industrial cleansing, degreasing, glue formation, and textile manufacturing. In the lab, hexanes see use as a nonpolar chromatography solvent and in reactions involving strong bases due to their stability.

Safety and Handling

Highly flammable. Explosion risk. Inhalation hazard. Acute exposure to hexane vapors can cause dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, blurred vision, headache and anorexia. Keep out of reach of children. Use only in a well ventilated area and with proper personal protective equipment. Refer to the SDS sheet for further information.
